Health and Wellness

Our Efforts

The FRN has taken a number of steps to maintain and improve the health of youth and adolescents in our communities. In this work, the FRN was the first in West Virginia to receive the Federal Carol M. White Physical Education Program Grant in 2005. This grant enabled children to become more active through programs that taught skills needed to lead a healthier life.

Even though the grant ended in 2009, most of the programs started have been sustained through community involvement and support as active and successful programs.  Marshall County Schools enhanced their curriculum through the inclusion of Action-Based Learning (ABL) and Yoga Education. Those evidence-based programs combined physical activity with academics to increase student involvement and achievement. Students in grades 7-12 participated in the West Virginia Archery in the Schools Program, which utilized an archery module that not only taught the physical aspects of the sport, but also encouraged related assignments across subject areas in order to promote a comprehensive learning experience. As a result, the Marshall County Archery Club was established to offer interested students the opportunity to compete at a higher level. It remains an active club today.

The FRN also provided a Disc Golf course throughout Moundsville's Grand Vue Park. More than simply an opportunity to be active, the Disc Golf course has proved a continuously successful way of bringing locals together, leading to increased use and a greater sense of ownership of Marshall County's parks and the surrounding natural beauty.

AHI Health Initiative

The West Virginia Adolescent Health Initiative supports a dedicated network of eight regional Adolescent Health Coordinators (AHI) across the state of West Virginia.  The FRN receives funding from the Department of Health and Human Resources to staff the Region VI Coordinator and administer services to Hancock, Brooke, Ohio, Marshall and Wetzel Counties.

The Region VI Coordinator of the West Virginia Adolescent Health Initiative (WVAHI), who is a FRN staff member, serves Hancock, Brooke, Ohio, Marshall and Wetzel Counties as a community educator and organizer supporting collaborative efforts to foster the social, emotional, cognitive, physical and spiritual well-being of youth through a positive youth development approach.

The Adolescent Health Initiative Coordinator provides community education opportunities and coordinates efforts that promote positive youth development.  The Positive Youth Development approach offers support, guidance, and opportunities for youth to enhance their skills and allows young people to make important decisions about their own lives, and the organizations that serve them.  The AHI works with schools, groups, and organizations to guide them through the Positive Youth Development approach and to help develop action plans to achieve success.
